Tomatoes here in Tokushima is the side dish when we eat Soba, which actually it’s good combination. Between shoyu soup and soba noodle contrasted with the taste of tomatoes very well.

Honestly, I’m not the person who likes tomatoes and I believe that most of people in this world doesn’t like it too because its SMELL! But trust me most, Tomatoes here in Tokushima is different. It has little sweet and mild sour flavour. And this crunchy raw tomatoes has most important feature is it’s SMELL GOOD!

For someone who hate Tomatoes like me, you better give it a try and for someone who love it, plant it, take care of it, pick and eat it, you will change the perspective of tomatoes.

BELL & BEAR AT POGAWA

SHARE NOW

Here's the entrances of Shibetsu Wetland and along the way you will pass the forest before arriving the village. The guide let us attach this small bell or cat's bell before enter the gate.

WHY DO WE NEED THE SMALL BELL?

The reason is simple, because there's the bear in the forest and this bell can protect us. Seriously!!?? That's another question I ask. Although Pogawa Historical Village was opened since 1979 but the forest area around the Ruins Site wasn't destroyed but keep it same. So there're bears still live here.

'Ging, Ging' the small bell was ringing while we walking. This sound is uncommon among the forest, but it's commonly tell those bears that human has arrived, please go away. This is how we can protect ourself.

Also, when we arrive at some checkpoint, there is the bell hang with the trees for us to ring. To tell the bear and wild animal that, we are here! Don't come!

The staff at Historical Village Museum let us attached small bell with belt loops and walk along to let the bear and wild life noticed. This is same logic as pet owners are attached cat bell to the collar of the cat to warn potential preys of the cat's approach.

From this experience, I notice how Japanese really care to every single life; The tourist, the bear and the forest. Why? Because this is simplest way to make everyone happy, Japanese doesn't want anyone to get hurt.  You can see from the example below.

HUNTERS VS BELLS

Let say if we know that Pogawa Historical Village has bear in the forest that might harm the human, so how to solve this problem to make sure our tourists will be safe along the trip.

Shibetsu Pogawa Historical Village Big Bear
Shibetsu Pogawa Historical Village small Bell

• Hunter Solution
Let the tourists go with hunter. If bear approach, just shot! It's not wrong, the hunter just want to protect the tourists but it harm the bear.

• Bell Solution
Let the tourists go with the small bell. The nature of the bear is when they heard some strange sound, it will run away. Human is safe and so do the bear

Shibetsu Pogawa Historical Village small Bell

DO YOU NOTICED WHY SMALL BELL DESIGN WITH BELT LOOPS HANGING?

  • Japanese don't want to give just bell because you need to hold it and shake it
  • Japanese don't want to give you wrist bell because our wrist is not the same size and it might be uncomfortable.
  • But Japanese people give you that small bell with belt loops hanging because while you walking it makes bell ring at the same time.
